GOD THE MOTHER?

If you like exploring different places, you have probably encountered the followers of “God the Mother.” This belief is spread by the World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG), a cult that began in South Korea and has now reached many parts of the world, including the Philippines. It was founded in 1964 by Ahn Sahng-Hong, whom they claim is the second coming of Christ, and later continued by his wife Zahng Gil-jah, who calls herself “God the Mother” or “Heavenly Mother.” To support their false teaching, they often use analogies and quote selected Bible verses.

FEMALE CREATOR?

One of their favorite passages is Genesis 1:26–27: “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image’…So God created man in his own image…male and female he created them.” They argue that because God is referred to here as “Elohim” (a plural noun) and says, “Let us make man,” this proves that both a male and a female deity were involved in creation. Their conclusion: there must be a God the Mother.

Yes, the word Elohim is plural in form, but it does not mean there are multiple gods. Many scholars call this the “plural of majesty,” a Hebrew way of emphasizing God’s greatness while still referring to one God. Some interpret the plural as a hint of the Trinity—one God in three persons. Others suggest it reflects God addressing His heavenly council. Whatever view you hold, the Bible is clear that God was not speaking to another god like Himself, for Scripture consistently affirms that there is only one God (Isaiah 44:6; Deuteronomy 6:4; 1 Timothy 2:5).
Nor does the creation of male and female imply that a male and a female deity created them. God is called “Father,” but that does not mean He has a gender. God is Spirit and does not have a physical body (John 4:24). If God cannot literally be considered male, there is no basis for claiming that there is a female creator.

BRIDE OF THE LAMB?

The group also cites passages from Revelation, claiming that “God the Mother” is the Bride of the Lamb (Revelation 21:9; 22:17). This is a misinterpretation. The Bride of the Lamb refers not to an individual person but to the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:2), which symbolically represents the people of God—the believers who dwell in His eternal city (vv. 3–4).

JERUSALEM OUR MOTHER?

They also appeal to Galatians 4:26: “But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.” According to their teaching, this “Jerusalem above” is God the Mother. But Paul’s discussion here is an analogy for the New Covenant, not a literal person from South Korea. Paul contrasts two women representing two covenants (v. 24): Hagar, a slave, symbolizes the earthly Jerusalem tied to the Old Covenant, while Sarah, the free woman, symbolizes the heavenly Jerusalem and the freedom of the New Covenant (vv. 23, 25–26). Believers in Christ, born through the promise, are children of Sarah and heirs of God (v. 7). Reading the passage in context makes the meaning unmistakably clear.

______

This movement ultimately proclaims a false gospel. Their official site claims, “Just as all children receive life from their mothers, it is God’s will for the children of God to receive eternal life from God the Mother and enter Heaven. The World Mission Society Church of God is the only church that believes in God the Mother.” Yet Scripture teaches there is no such being as God the Mother, and more importantly, there is no need for one. God the Son is sufficient to reconcile people to God the Father: “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). Stay Curious.
