WHY DO WE SAY "AMEN" WHEN WE PRAY?
It has become a common practice for everyone to say “amen” at the end of a prayer. Some believe it is merely a tradition we do, whether we understand its meaning or not. Others think of it as a kind of magic word to ensure heaven hears the prayer. For some, it is just a closing word meaning “That’s all, Lord” or “Okay, I’m done praying.” Today, let’s explore this frequently used word and uncover the timeless truths behind “amen.”
ORIGIN OF AMEN
“Amen” originates from Hebrew and means “firm” or “faithful.” Because God keeps His promises, He is also called “faithful (amen)” in Deuteronomy 7:9. Being faithful means being true; hence, God is called the “God of truth (amen)” in Isaiah 65:16. Psalm 19:7 also declares that the testimony of the Lord is sure (amen). It is used as an affirmation that what has been said is true, which is why it appears in doxologies (Ps. 41:14; 72:19; 89:53; etc.). Jesus used “amen” to emphasize the truth of His teaching: “Truly (amen), truly (amen), I say to you” (Jn 3:3; 8:34; 13:16; etc.). The Jews would respond “amen” at the conclusion of prayers to affirm what was said, meaning “so be it,” “may it be fulfilled,” or “I agree”—a practice inherited by Christians.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF AMEN IN PRAYER
1. GOD IS FAITHFUL
By saying “amen,” we acknowledge that God is faithful. We trust that He will answer our prayers because we believe in His character (Deut 7:9; 2 Cor 1:20; Rev 3:14). Ending our prayers with “amen” is a reminder to ourselves of God’s reliability.
2. AFFIRMING TRUTHFULNESS
Saying “amen” also affirms the truthfulness of our prayers. God desires honesty from those who approach Him. Jesus prayed candidly when He asked the Father to remove His cup of suffering if possible (Lk 22:42). David’s prayers in the Psalms show his honesty, which is why God called him a man after His own heart (Acts 13:22). Since God hates a lying tongue (Prov 6:17), our prayers must also be sincere.
3. AN EXPRESSION OF FAITH
“Amen” should not be treated like a mere ritualistic word. It expresses trust that God will grant what we ask, according to His will. We must pray in faith, without doubting (James 1:6). We say “amen” because we believe.
4. A SIGN OF SUBMISSION
Saying “amen” after “in Jesus’ name” emphasizes submission. “In Jesus’ name” means “according to the will of Jesus.” By adding “amen,” we acknowledge that whatever we request, we ultimately desire Christ’s will to be fulfilled. It is like saying, “May it be fulfilled if it is according to the will of Christ.” Christ Himself exemplifies submission in prayer (Lk 22:42): “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us” (1 Jn 5:14).
