GOD DOES NOT EXIST: An Illogical Claim

"God does not exist." All the beliefs of Atheism could be summarized in these four words. Obviously, we have countless arguments and evidences to disprove this idea. However, we don’t have enough time to discuss all of them today. For now, our focus is only on the assertion itself: “God does not exist.” What’s wrong with this statement?

It is logically indefensible. In other words, it cannot be defended by argument or sound reasoning. How so? A person would first need to possess infinite knowledge of every corner of the entire universe and of all time in order to say, “Yes, there truly is no God.” Only in that way could his statement be based on truth. Dr. Ron Rhodes puts it this way: “One would have to search every portion of the universe thoroughly and simultaneously—in essence, having infinite knowledge of the universe—in order to make this assertion based on the facts. This view amounts to saying, ‘I have infinite knowledge that no being exists with infinite knowledge.’ To put it another way, a person would have to be God in order to say God cannot exist.” For example, when I say that there is no elephant in my room right now, I am indirectly saying that I have already seen every corner of the room and found no proof of an elephant being there. I can defend my claim because I have the ability to prove my point (not to mention that it’s impossible for an elephant to fit inside my room!).

A person who claims that God does not exist assumes that he has enough ability and knowledge to prove his statement—which makes the idea unreasonable. No matter how intelligent a person may be, it is impossible to prove that God does not exist on the basis of limited knowledge. Dr. Rhodes is right: you would need infinite knowledge in order to prove that no Being with infinite knowledge exists. Get it?

Now the question is: Do we also need infinite knowledge to affirm that God exists? No, there’s no need for that. What a person needs is an honest evaluation of the available facts. We already have more than enough evidences and arguments to support that God exists! Therefore, it is not necessary to know absolutely everything before we decide whether or not to believe.

We don’t need infinite knowledge to know that the universe had a beginning. And if everything that begins to exist has a cause, then this fact points to the existence of God, the Ultimate Cause. There is no better explanation than Him. Likewise, we don’t need to investigate every single thing in the universe to prove intelligent design. The complexity of just a single human cell is already more than enough to support this argument. Once again, this truth points to the existence of God, the Intelligent Designer. No better option exists. For a person to consistently hold to Atheism, he must deliberately close his eyes to where the evidence leads. If everything points to the right, he must still insist that the way is to the left. Such an act requires more faith than the greatest religious believer who ever lived! In truth, it takes more faith to believe that God does not exist than to believe that He does. As Dr. Norm Geisler said: “I don’t have enough faith to be an atheist.” Stay Curious.
