CAN THE POSSIBILITY OF ALIENS DISPROVE OUR FAITH?

When it comes to aliens, extraterrestrial life, or UFOs, it’s impossible not to stir curiosity. Last 2023, alleged alien bodies were displayed before Mexico’s Congress, capturing global attention. Whether these were real aliens or not, discussions like this are intriguing for us believers. What does the Bible actually say about aliens? If intelligent life forms really exist on other planets, is that enough reason to question our faith in God? Could the existence of extraterrestrial beings ever shake the foundation of Christianity?

What does the Bible say?

First of all, the Bible is silent on this issue. Just as it never explicitly tells us there are intelligent life forms like us on other planets, it also does not deny the possibility. The Bible’s focus is God’s relationship with human beings here on earth. We cannot expect it to explain in detail things that do not directly concern humanity. Yet we do know we are not alone in the universe—God created spiritual beings such as angels and demons. And if extraterrestrials exist, we can simply assume that they, too, are created beings of the same Creator we call God.

Can the possibility of aliens disprove God’s existence?

The arguments and evidence for God’s existence are strong enough to affirm that He exists. Whether aliens exist on other planets or not, this does not change the truth that the universe has a cause. The principle that “something cannot come from nothing” remains true. No matter where you go in the Milky Way, nothing will ever create something. And we have more than enough reasons to believe that God is the First Cause. If aliens exist, they too owe their existence to Him. Each argument for God’s existence stands firm, regardless of whether God created other intelligent beings within or beyond our solar system.

Can the existence of aliens shake our Christian faith?

Christianity stands or falls on one truth—the resurrection of Jesus Christ—not on whether aliens exist in some distant galaxy. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:14 that if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching and our faith are useless. The truth of Christianity doesn’t depend on the absence of aliens—it depends on the empty tomb. And we have more than enough historical reasons to believe that the tomb is empty. The resurrection is a fact of history! Even if a spaceship from the Andromeda galaxy were to land tomorrow, it could never disprove the resurrection. Christianity remains true, aliens or not.

So, what if aliens do exist?

Theologically, this question remains open. But if they exist, would they challenge our faith? I don’t think so. At most, their existence would stir up deeper curiosity and more questions: Were they also created in God’s image? How do they know God? Do they struggle with sin too? If yes, did Jesus come to their world as well? Thankfully, there is nothing wrong with asking such questions. Stay Curious.
