LET'S TALK ABOUT ABORTION
It is alarming to see that there are people promoting abortion here in the country. What’s more disturbing is that these people try to make it look “progressive,” “pro-women,” and “practical,” while hiding the fact that abortion is murdering an unborn, helpless, and innocent child. It is also noticeable how some of them present those who disagree as not “open” or not ready for these kinds of conversations. Really? But in reality, they cannot provide a reasonable basis for promoting such an evil practice.
Today, let’s answer some of the common statements/arguments used to support abortion:
Based on research conducted in 2013, the reasons why a woman in the US decides to have an abortion are mainly financial reasons, partner-related reasons, and the need to focus on other children. This is similar to the results of an earlier study in 2005 on the same topic, which found that abortions were sought because they interfere with education, work, and the ability to care for other dependents, due to financial inability, and lack of choice. Though we recognize that these reasons are real and we sympathize with those who have experienced them, let’s face the truth that none of these can justify killing a young life.
“My Body. My Choice!”
“Not your body. Not your business.”
“It's the woman's right and choice to do whatever she wants with her body!”
All of us have the right to do what we want with our bodies, but there are limitations. Not everything I feel like doing with my body is permissible, especially if it harms others. I cannot rob someone and then justify it by saying, “These are my hands anyway.” I cannot just kick someone out of nowhere and then say, “It’s my choice to use my feet.” Body autonomy stops when it harms another.
The unborn child is not part of a woman’s body. A child inside her has never been one of her organs, even though it is dependent on her for a period of time. Anyone who claims that a fetus is a body organ needs to go back to kindergarten or elementary school to study the basic facts about human anatomy.
Yes, it is a personal and private decision between two consenting adults to engage in sexual activity. But what they do to the baby that is conceived, especially if they later realize they were not prepared for their actions, does not fall under that same category.
“It’s not a human yet.”
“The fetus is a parasite!”
Once the sperm fertilizes the egg, conception occurs. The zygote (fertilized egg) is the earliest stage of human development. That’s basic biology. In other words, it is already a human being, but still developing. The main difference between a fetus and a newborn baby is time and place. One is still inside the womb, but after some time, it will eventually come out.
The basic definition of a parasite is an organism that lives in or on another organism (a host) that is not of the same kind. A fetus is not a different species from its mother. They are both human. That is called “pregnancy,” not “parasitism.” This kind of argument dehumanizes the unborn who are unable to defend themselves.
“No uterus. No opinion.”
“Men have no right to speak on an issue that concerns only women.”
“That’s not concern—that’s control.”
Abortion is not just a “women-only” issue. It is a moral issue. In topics like this, it is not about gender. In other words, whether you have a uterus or not, you are involved in these discussions. If a woman were to kill a person, it would not be right to say that only fellow women should stop her while men simply stand on the sidelines because they are not allowed to interfere. Anyone has the right to speak up and step in when a life is at stake and others choose to remain silent.
Not because some men are against abortion can we say that they simply want to control women. That misrepresents the point. Many who oppose abortion have no interest in controlling women; they simply want to protect a life. All the more, we should defend the right to life of the unborn, because they are not yet able to defend themselves.“Abortion is forced pregnancy!”
“When a woman is raped, she should not be forced to carry the child!”
If a child is conceived out of sexual abuse, can we say that he or she no longer has the right to live? Is the child no longer considered human because he or she was conceived through rape? The unborn has the right to life; it remains true even if the child is unplanned, unloved, or unwanted.
Yes, allowing a victim to go through pregnancy will not undo the damage done by the rapist—and neither will abortion. Abortion also makes the victim guilty of doing something wrong. In a sense, both the rapist and the victim would then be involved in something inhumane. Abortion also creates another victim: the preborn child. Just as the victim did not choose what happened to her, the child did not choose to be conceived in that way.
We can be compassionate—but not compromising. We are not denying the challenges a woman faces in an unwanted pregnancy. It is truly difficult. But that is not a sufficient reason to kill a child simply for the sake of convenience.
“If you don’t like it, don’t do it!”
“Don’t impose your religious beliefs on others.”
“If you don’t like killing, then just don’t do it.” “If you don’t like corruption, then don’t engage in it. No one is forcing you.” That sounds bad when you read it, doesn’t it? Issues involving human rights and morality are not matters of personal preference. They are not simply about individual tastes where you can say, “If you like it, do it; if not, then don’t.” It is not like choosing what to wear or what food to order. Human lives are at risk in the abortion debate.
Also, the subject of abortion is not merely a matter of personal belief. While I believe that some religious beliefs should not be imposed on others, the truths that human lives are valuable and that we should not murder go beyond religious discussion. Whether you worship Goku or Batman, life is valuable, and killing will never be right.
“Abortion is birth control.”
“Abortion is healthcare.”
“If we don’t make abortion legal, it’s the women who resort to unsafe procedures who will suffer.”
Abortion intentionally ends a human life—and therefore it is not healthcare. There are rare and extreme cases in which carrying a child to full term may seriously endanger the mother’s life, and in such situations, preterm delivery may be recommended. Preterm delivery is an attempt to save both the mother and the child by delivering the baby earlier than expected. That is not the same as abortion. The intentional killing of the unborn cannot be considered healthcare, because pregnancy is not a disease; it is a normal and natural process.
Birth control prevents pregnancy. Abortion ends it. They are not the same. Birth control seeks to prevent the conception of a child. In abortion, a child has already been conceived, but is prevented from continuing to develop and is intentionally killed before birth.
Some argue that abortion should be made legal because women are already seeking it secretly and often through unsafe methods—sometimes even losing their lives in the process. But the truth is, we do not decriminalize a harmful practice simply to make it safer. Many people are harmed because of drug abuse. Does that mean we should legalize illegal drugs, discard all related laws, and make their use safer and more convenient? No. The reasonable solution is not to allow people to do whatever they want, but to improve the system so that mothers facing difficult circumstances can find and choose better, life-affirming options. Stay Curious.
