MOVE FORWARD BY LOOKING BACK
We often read repeated instructions in the Bible to remember. “Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt” (Exodus 13:13). “Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years” (Deuteronomy 8:2). “Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live” (Deuteronomy 4:9). “Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me” (Isaiah 46:9). These are only a few of the many verses urging God’s people to reflect on the past, showing the wisdom of looking back.
A new year naturally stirs excitement for what lies ahead—fresh goals to reach, plans to pursue, places to explore, people to meet. There is nothing wrong with looking forward to good things. Yet there is equal wisdom in pausing to remember. By revisiting both the successes and the struggles of the past, we gain strength and perspective for the future.
As another year begins, recall the challenges you once thought you would never overcome—the frustrations, disappointments, and wrong turns that felt overwhelming. Look back and see how the merciful God carried you through every trial. Remember as well the victories and milestones: the answered prayers, the unexpected blessings, the moments when God did the impossible for you. Celebrate His generosity and faithfulness as you step into what’s next.
“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago” (Psalm 77:11).
