THE FINISHED WORK OF CHRIST: What Did Jesus Actually Accomplish?

1. REDEMPTION FOR SINNERS

Galatians 3:13“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree’—”
Ephesians 1:7“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,”
Revelation 5:9“And they sang a new song, saying, ‘Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,’”

2. RECONCILIATION TO THE FATHER

Romans 5:10“For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.”
2 Corinthians 5:18–19“All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.”
Ephesians 2:6“and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,”
Colossians 1:20“and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”

3. SALVATION FROM THE WRATH OF GOD

John 3:36“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
Romans 5:9“Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.”
1 Thessalonians 1:10“and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.”
1 Thessalonians 5:9“For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,”

5. PURIFICATION OF SIN

1 Corinthians 6:9–11– “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

Galatians 1:4 “who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,”

Hebrews 10:10 “and by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

Revelation 1:5 “and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood”

6. CONDEMNATION OF THE SIN NATURE

Romans 6:1–6 “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.”

7. DESTRUCTION TO THE DEVIL

Colossians 2:15 “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”

Hebrews 2:14 “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,”

1 John 3:8“Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.”

7. FULFILLMENT OF THE PROPHECIES

Luke 24:46“and said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,’

1 Corinthians 15:3“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,”

8. COMPLETION OF THE LAW

Matthew 5:17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

Romans 10:4“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”

9. RESTORATION FOR ISRAEL

Zechariah 13:1“On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.”

Romans 11:26–27“And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, ‘The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob’; ‘and this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins.’”
