WHO MADE GOD?
For us believers, we believe that everything that has a beginning must have a cause. It is proven that the universe has a beginning; it is not truly infinite, and therefore it has a cause. It is reasonable to believe that this cause is none other than God, the Creator Himself. For those who question the reality of God, their usual response to this explanation is: “If the Lord created everything, then who created the Lord?” Most Christians, upon hearing such a reply, are often too shocked to respond!
First, we need to understand that the question itself is logically flawed. Yes, it is true that everything that has a beginning has a cause, but we believe that God has no beginning; therefore, He has no cause. God does not belong to the category of things that have a beginning or an origin. It is clear that nothing cannot produce something, and because the universe exists, it follows that something caused it to exist. We affirm that God is the First Cause—therefore, He is uncaused.
Second, the question assumes that there must be an explanation for the explanation before we can accept it. For critics, God cannot be considered the best explanation for the origin of the universe unless we can also explain His own origin. This is both unfair and impractical. For example, if you found a watch on the beach, it would be unreasonable to demand to know where it came from, who designed it, or where the manufacturer lives before concluding that someone made it—that it did not just randomly come into existence through waves or crabs. You don’t need an explanation for the explanation to recognize that a watch must have a designer. In the same way, we don’t need to know everything about God—or even His origin—to accept that He is the best explanation for the beginning of the universe.
While some people ask this question in order to attack the Christian faith, others raise it simply out of curiosity. Not everyone who asks such questions wants to debate! That’s why Christians who encounter this kind of question must respond with wisdom and discernment. We are not just answering questions for the sake of argument; we are leading people to Christ. “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” (1 Peter 3:15–16, NIV).
